Summer in the Hills at its best

The theme of this year‘s Summer in the Hills is “Health in the Hill Country”. The official opening festivities for Summer in the Hills will be held on June 17 at the and in Seidlwinkl valley, . Hikers, mountain bikers and guests can look forward to a wide variety of special events and surprises at the region’s alpine huts and chalets.

“Summer in the Hills” is neither a modern invention nor a nostalgic memory: It is every bit as authentic as the hill farmers who look after the mountain huts during the summer and happily welcome guests year after year.  It is as genuine as the ancient grazing rights enjoyed by the farmers, and as deeply rooted as the hearty foods which are served there. Up in the mountains, there are no superfluous formalities: It is all about those things that are good and genuine, things which have been preserved in SalzburgerLand over countless years. At our 154 certified Summer in the Hills Huts, it is clearly evident how traditions handed down through the generations have been adapted to the expectations of today’s world.

Motto 2012: “Health in the Hill Country”

This year’s Summer in the Hills theme revolves around good health: with the healthy food and drinks produced, refined and served by Salzburg’s farmers very much taking center stage.  Herbs and medicinal plants – both for teas as well as beauty and medicinal treatments, various approaches to wellness and healing that harness the powers of natural ingredients from SalzburgerLand, plus sporting activities that are held during Summer in the Hills, all play a major role.

 Summer in the Hills Specialists

SalzburgerLand is currently home to 154 certified Summer in the Hills Huts. These wonderfully situated huts have to meet strict criteria, and are distinguished by their authentic qualities, as well as production of their own regional specialties or by animals grazing close to the hut. Many of our Summer in the Hills Huts have specialized in any of four different areas. We have, for example, the so-called Pram Huts, which are easy to reach via forest paths, even when you happen to be pushing a pram. Then there are the Kids’ Huts with petting zoos, play equipment made of natural materials, exciting adventure paths, or maybe even water to play in; Mountain Bike Huts, reachable via official mountain bike trails, and the Art & Culture Huts, which host events relating to music, the visual arts, literature or theater.

Official Summer in the Hills 2012 Opening Festivities

With a high-spirited celebration at the Palfneralm and Gollehenalm, Rauris gets Summer in the Hills 2012 underway on June 17. The newly constructed Gollehenalm surprises its guests with culinary products from their own farm, while the Palfneralm has been owned by the Wölfler family for 70 years. Aside from culinary morsels, the glorious views of Hohe Tauern National Park’s imposing mountain world entice you to linger a while and enjoy the company of your fellow guests. And for our littler hill-country visitors, an exciting entertainment program, a playground and a petting zoo guarantee an unforgettable day in the Rauris valley.

Delightful Hikes along the Salzburger Almenweg Trail

The Salzburger Almenweg, 350 kilometers in total length divided into 31 stages, interconnects all 25 towns and villages of the Pongau region. From any of these communities, you can either access the next stage of your hiking tour, or simply set out on an easy day-hike. Which means, everyone is to find a stage that is perfectly suited for them: From “Hikes with Kith & Kin” along the Hochglocker Family Tour, to a challenging expedition to the top of the Hochkönig.

In order to get you in the perfect frame of mind for Summer in the Hills, we would recommend taking a virtual tour ahead of time at www.salzburger-almenweg.at.  On this website, you will also find a 3-D view of each tour, along with an aerial photo and video. Tour data can also be downloaded to your GPS device.
